Argo CD and Rollouts 2021 User Survey
Summary
The 2021 Argo CD and Rollouts user survey feedback exposes a vibrant and growing global community. This year, 66 respondents offered a view into their usage and adoption.
The calculated NPS score came in at an amazing 68, showing how the dedication and efforts from the Argo community is appreciated by the user base. This was further highlighted by the fact that almost half of the respondents are willing to promote their work with and around Argo by speaking publicly about it!
“What a great work ! I can not imagine managing K8S without ArgoCD :D”
The raw data can be found here.
Job Roles
The majority of answers came from people working as Engineers, either as DevOps or Software Engineers, which combined came in at just over 2/3 of the total. The four largest categories covered nearly 90%, with the remaining sprinkled across roles such as SRE, CTO or Product Owner
DevOps Engineers: 55%
Software Engineers: 14%
Architects: 14%
Cluster Admin: 6%
Use Cases
Given the large percentage of engineers responding, it’s not surprising that the main use case is application delivery, used by an overwhelming majority of users.
Cluster Configuration and Operations Monitoring are also popular and are both areas where additional enhancements are being looked at. If you use Argo for one (or both) of those use cases, drop into a community meeting and make your voice and asks heard!

Production Usage
Argo CD has enjoyed a steady and linear growth, based on GitHub stars and that healthy growth is represented well, with a fairly even split between new, seasoned and long term users. The few users that indicated that they were not yet in production were still waiting to complete internal processes, training or maturity, a few reasons given were:
“Completion of production readiness review”
“Internal process maturity”
“slow changes/innovations in company”

Scale and Size
The differences in scale and size is another testament to how diverse the user base is and the ability of Argo to be nimble enough to cater to smaller deployments, yet scale when needed. 90% of users have less than 10 clusters and no one is reporting more than 50 clusters, however, the cluster sizes ranges from small deployments in the single digits of nodes up to a couple of users that have 300+ node in each cluster.

Feature and tool usage
The excellent UI in Argo CD is the most popular feature, with all but three respondents indicating using it. Auto-sync and SSO integrations also stand out as very popular features. What is also note-worthy is that newer features, like application set and notifications are already seeing some healthy usage, confirming that they were good investments and that the community has an appetite for using the latest and greatest!

The most diverse answers came on the tools question and though GitLab and Jenkins are the most popular, there’s a wide variety of other tools used together with Argo.

Argo Family
Naturally, CD was the dominant component used from the Argo family, but almost a quarter of people also use Argo Workflows and it’s great to see so many using more of the components. Especially looking at CD and Rollouts, where over 2/3 responded that they’re considering adding Rollouts to their environment in the future.
As the components continues to evolve, there will be more opportunities for better interaction and benefits across the entire Argo family.

Final Words
Thank you to the community for taking time to answer the 2021 user survey. The feedback and data will be fed back into the community and put to good use in making Argo even better!
An extra big Thank You to everyone who also mentioned a willingness to come and present at a community meeting, do a user study, provide a quote or write a blog post. We will be reaching out to you to figure out what we can do together.
